Books I Read in 2024
Arsenic and Adobo
In typical Filipino fashion, my aunt expressed her love not through words of encouragement or affectionate embraces, but through food.
Food was how she communicated. Food was how she found her place in the world. When someone rejected her food, they were really rejecting her heart. It crushed her.

it is. so hard to find good disabled x reader fics. and it feels even harder to ask for them?? like pretty much the only x reader fics/hcs iâve seen for physically disabled readers are ones iâve personally requested. there are Slightly more for neurodivergent readers but theyâre still ultimately few and far between
drop your favorite disabled x reader fics in the reblogs and comments, iâd love to see more representation đĽş

Can you write Alessia Russo x reader where reader has known her and Ella toone for years and is always watching their matches no matter what but reader and Alessia fall in love behind Ellaâs back and then get found out?!
CAUGHT OUT - alessia russo
since before you could even remember, it had always been you and ella, the pair of you being practically attached at the hip from when you were babies, all the way up into adulthood. your bond only grew with time, and when she introduced you to alessia as young teenagers, the three of you very quickly became an absolutely inseparable trio - falling into eachotherâs stride with ease.
you werenât entirely sure where you ended and they begun.
even as you all got older and couldnât physically see each other as much as you used to - with them both at the peaks of their careers, and the travel and demands that came alongside that, and you caught up in your own career - you still remained a solid unit. your family.
you didnât play football, you never had, having always been the scrawny little kid who was terrified of pe lessons, earning yourself the lifelong nickname âtinyâ, which still stuck even as a fully grown adult. but you were there for every single one of your girlsâ moments. rain or shine, no matter what side of the world, or how busy you were with work, youâd be in the stands, cheering them on.
today was no different - finding yourself sat at wembley, a stadium youâd come to learn inside and out, to watch them play. you always adored being at games, seeing your girls flourish always made you want to burst with pride. and likewise, they loved having you there, always playing their best when you were in the crowd- branding you their âgood luck charmâ, and constantly bickering over whose jersey youâd wear to the matches.
-
being such a tight knit group, and having such a set routine when it came to games - alessiaâs transfer to arsenal changed things for the three of you. many things, in fact.
for almost the entirety of the time youâd known them, theyâd played for the same teams - the only exception prior to this being alessiaâs college days. for you, it came as an adjustment, a new team to learn about so youâd be able to fully understand and appreciate her future stories, different games to go to, and the realisation that your two favourite people were going to play against eachother at some point. at multiple points.
this also meant that most of the time when you were going to one of their games, you wouldnât see the other. this didnât make a difference when it came to the times you would go to watch ella play, but with alessia, it changed things. it blurred lines that the pair of you had previously forced yourselves to draw, using ella as an almost reason, signifying the fact you were best friends, and thatâs all it was.
in fact, you actually had no idea at what point exactly you and alessia became more than friends. from the secret stolen kisses at sleepovers as teenagers for âpracticeâ to the lingering glances and touches that lasted just a second longer than friendly ones should, you werenât even sure that you had ever truly been just that.
however, with the sudden absence of the pair of yourâs best friend, and the physical representation of the walls put between you, said wall came crashing down - within alessiaâs first week at her new club.
your relationship very quickly blossomed from that moment, a decades worth of hidden, suppressed feelings from both sides pouring out.
despite how obviously in love with each other you were, you had been terrified to reveal it to the world, specifically your world, not wanting to lose, or even slightly affect your friendship with her.
the arsenal girls had figured it out instantly the first time they met you, and had been sworn to secrecy by a very flustered and panicked alessia, which made matters even worse, and made what you were doing feel like even more of a betrayal to your best friend.
the months of sneaking around and not being able to tell ella about a relationship you were in for the first time in your life was killing you, and the more time that passed made it more awkward to come out and say to her.
there had been many close calls that didnât help your stressing over her reaction, from the one time you had to climb out of alessiaâs bedroom window when ella unexpectedly showed up demanding a girls night after training, and then had to wait twenty minutes outside before going around to the front door to pretend youâd just arrived, to the time youâd had to practically leap apart mid drunken make out when you had hosted a group of your friends at your apartment and one of them stumbled into the kitchen without warning, and thankfully (for you, not for her) it was only leah.
-
your cheeks flushed furiously as alessia spun you around, her and ella both immediately finding you after the final whistle had blown, and the lionesses solidified their well earned win.
âsee tooney our little good luck charm always comes in handy!â the blonde patted your head after releasing you from her grasp - giggling when ella immediately latched onto you in response, ordering you to âpick her upâ after youâd already caught her in your arms.
âmy girls! this calls for celebrations, come on, weâre going out!â she yelled, almost ear piercingly loud - quite literally for you, as you foolishly held her right next to your ear.
there was a group of the younger players who always went out to party after wins, and you naturally went along every time - having known most of them for the same time youâd known your best friends, practically being an extra limb to either one of them.
you hung around the locker rooms waiting for them to change and shower, rolling your eyes at the winks and nudges of beth and leah as they passed you, and shoving them away - catching a glimpse of alessia and ella closely behind them, particularly focusing on the formerâs panicked expression.
-
the journey back to the teamâs hotel was one that could only be described as loud and chaotic. you were sat on your girlfriendâs lap, squished between her and the seat in-front of you, and ella was sat next to you, so close that it was practically a pile up.
thankfully, she was too busy bellowing an interesting rendition of âislands in the streamâ to notice the blondeâs hand on your hip, pulling you flush into her and drawing little hearts and stars onto the exposed skin from where your shirt had risen up.
you and your best friends had always been touchy, so you on one of their laps was a regular occurrence, therefore there was no way in your mind that ella could find out.
-
you were back and being ushered into their room to get ready for the night ahead before you knew it - desperately attempting not to blush furiously as alessia helped you top up your makeup, following ellaâs strict orders so you could all match.
âright i need to find mary she said sheâd curl my hair! less, remember what i said! i know how clumsy you are just follow what i told you, yeah? mary! mary!â she didnât even give herself a chance to finish her own sentence before she was darting out of the room, voice echoing the corridor and most likely gaining a future noise complaint in the process.
not even a second after she was out of sight, alessia turned to you with a grin that only you could read - pulling you into her.
âoh iâve been desperate to get you alone all week, iâve missed you baby.â she grinned, throwing her arms around you and peppering kisses all over your face before finally meeting your lips.
you melted into her touch, instantly being returned home just by the slightest trace of her fingertips in your hair, and laughing as she playfully pushed you down onto the bed.
you barely had time to register her the feeling of her lips, and the comforting weight of her on top of you before the sound of a door being flung open and a following gasp hit your ears.
alessia practically flew off of you as you threw your head back onto the pillow and scrunched your eyes closed. you knew exactly who it was without even needing to look.
âel we can expl-â
âMARY YOU OWE ME SO MUCH MONEY!â
and she was gone just as fast as she stumbled in, cackling as mary groaned from the next room.

perfect just the way you are // leah williamson
leah williamson x neurodivergent reader
a/n : iâm literally editing and uploading all my drafts because im on a writing grind, please feel free to send requests! also this is not an accurate representation of neuroscience, this is just one of the ways i experience it!!
warnings : none really! just comfort
Leah Williamson had always been known for her steady presence, the kind of calm that could anchor an entire team even in the most intense moments. She was the one you could rely on to keep a cool head, to make the right decisions under pressure, and to maintain a certain level of detachment that kept her focused on the game. But when it came to Y/N, all of that went out the window.
Y/N was different. She wasnât the kind of person who faded into the background or followed the crowd. Her mind was a kaleidoscope of interests and ideas, always buzzing with energy. It wasnât uncommon for her to launch into a discussion about the migration patterns of monarch butterflies in the middle of dinner or to suddenly start wondering aloud about the physics of time travel while walking through a park. Y/Nâs quirks made her endearing to those who knew her well, but they could also make her stand out in ways that werenât always easy.
One evening, the Arsenal girls were out celebrating a hard-fought win at a cozy restaurant in town. Leah had invited Y/N along, as she always did, eager to have her by her side during the rare moments of relaxation they all shared. Y/N had been excited, rambling on about a new documentary sheâd watched on ancient civilizations as they made their way to the restaurant.
The team had gathered around a long table, laughter and chatter filling the room. Y/N was seated next to Leah, as always, with Katie McCabe and Alessia Russo across from them. Y/N was her usual vibrant self, animatedly discussing the concept of time in different cultures with Alessia, who was doing her best to keep up.
âSo, in ancient Egypt,â Y/N began, her hands moving as she spoke, âtime was seen as this cyclical thing, not linear like we think of it today. They believed that everything was part of this ongoing cycle, which is why their rituals were so importantââ
Alessia, though genuinely interested, was starting to get a little overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information. She was about to respond when Beth Mead, who was seated a few spots down, cut in with a lighthearted, but careless comment.
âY/N, do you ever talk about anything normal?â Beth said, her tone teasing, tough Y/N sometimes had difficulty differentiating tones.
The words hung in the air for a moment, and the table went quiet. Y/Nâs face fell, the light in her eyes dimming as she processed what had been said. She tried to hide it, but Leah saw the hurt flash across her features.
Leahâs expression hardened almost immediately. She knew Beth hadnât meant any harmâBeth was like that sometimes, saying things without thinkingâbut that didnât make it any less painful for Y/N. Leah felt a surge of protectiveness rise up within her, a need to shield Y/N from any hurt, intentional or not.
âBeth,â Leahâs voice was calm, but there was a steely edge to it that made everyone at the table look up. âThat wasnât necessary.â
Beth blinked, realizing too late that her comment had hit a nerve. âOh, Y/N, I didnât mean it like that,â she said quickly, her tone apologetic. âI justââ
But Y/N was already pulling back into herself, her earlier enthusiasm snuffed out like a candle in the wind. She offered a small, strained smile, brushing it off. âNo, itâs fine. I know I can be a bit⌠much sometimes.â
Leah felt her heart clench at the words. She hated hearing Y/N talk about herself like that, as though her passions and quirks were something to apologize for. Without a second thought, Leah slid her chair closer to Y/N, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her into a comforting embrace.
âYouâre not too much,â Leah whispered into her ear, her voice soft and reassuring. âYouâre perfect, just the way you are.â
Y/N leaned into Leahâs side, the tension in her body slowly easing as she took comfort in Leahâs presence. âReally?â she asked, her voice small, filled with the vulnerability she so rarely let show.
âReally,â Leah confirmed, pressing a kiss to the side of her head. âI love the way your mind works, the way you see the world. Itâs one of the things I love most about you.â
Y/Nâs eyes filled with tears, though she quickly blinked them away, not wanting to make a scene. âI just⌠I never want to embarrass you.â
Leahâs expression softened, her hand gently cupping Y/Nâs cheek as she turned her to face her. âYou could never embarrass me. Youâre the most incredible person I know, and Iâm so proud of youâof everything that makes you who you are. Donât ever let anyone make you feel like you need to change, least of all yourself.â
Y/N looked into Leahâs eyes, seeing nothing but sincerity and love reflected back at her. It was a balm to the wound that Bethâs accidental, careless words had opened, and she felt a wave of gratitude wash over her. Leah always knew how to make her feel seen, understood, and cherished in a way that no one else ever had.
Katie, who had been watching the exchange with a guilty look, leaned over and nudged Beth, who was still looking mortified. âApologize properly,â Katie whispered, her tone gentle but firm.
Beth nodded, her earlier bravado replaced with genuine remorse. âY/N, Iâm really sorry. I didnât mean to hurt your feelings. I was just being a bit of an idiot.â
Y/N gave her a small, forgiving smile. âItâs okay, Beth. I know you didnât mean it. I just⌠I get excited about things sometimes.â
Beth smiled back, relieved. âWe all love that about you, Y/N. Keep being you, yeah?â
Y/N nodded, her spirits lifting slightly as the atmosphere around the table relaxed once more. Leah kept her arm around her, though, not letting go until she was sure Y/N was truly okay.
The rest of the evening passed without incident, the conversation flowing more naturally now that everyone was a bit more mindful. Leah stayed close to Y/N, making sure she felt supported and included, even as the topics shifted to more mundane matters.
Later, as they walked back to Leahâs place, Y/N was quieter than usual, her thoughts still lingering on what had happened. Leah noticed, of courseâshe always noticed.
âHey,â Leah said softly, stopping in her tracks and turning to face Y/N. âYou alright?â
Y/N shrugged, her eyes downcast. âI just⌠I donât want people to think Iâm weird, you know? I know I can be intense, and sometimes I worry that people just tolerate me because they have to.â
Leahâs heart ached at the vulnerability in Y/Nâs voice. She took Y/Nâs hands in hers, squeezing them gently. âYouâre not weird, and people donât just tolerate you. They care about you, Y/N. You bring something special to every room you walk into. Donât ever doubt that.â
Y/N looked up at her, her eyes searching Leahâs for any sign of doubt. But all she saw was unwavering love and support, and it made her heart swell with emotion.
âYou really think so?â Y/N asked, her voice barely above a whisper, uncertainty flickering in her gaze.
Leah nodded, her expression soft but resolute. âI do, Y/N. I think the world of you, and so do the others. Your mind, your heart, everything that makes you who you areâitâs all incredible to me.â
Y/N looked down at their joined hands, her thoughts swirling. âSometimes it just feels like Iâm too much. Like⌠people donât really get me, and Iâm just annoying them with the way I am.â
Leahâs grip on Y/Nâs hands tightened, a surge of protectiveness washing over her. âI know it can feel like that sometimes, but I promise you, itâs not true. Youâre not too much, Y/N. Youâre exactly enough, exactly who youâre supposed to be. And anyone who doesnât see thatâwell, theyâre missing out on something amazing.â
Y/Nâs eyes filled with tears again, but this time they were tears of relief, of gratitude. She felt the weight of her insecurities lifting, bit by bit, as Leahâs words sank in. âBut what if⌠what if Iâm too much for you?â
Leahâs heart broke at the vulnerability in Y/Nâs voice. She reached up, gently cupping Y/Nâs face in her hands, forcing her to meet her gaze. âYou could never be too much for me, Y/N. I love every part of you. Your energy, your passion, the way you light up when you talk about something that excites youâI love all of it. You make my life brighter just by being in it.â
Y/Nâs breath hitched, her hands trembling slightly as she absorbed Leahâs words. âI just⌠I donât want to be a burden to you. I donât want you to feel like you have to take care of me all the time.â
Leah shook her head, her thumbs brushing away the tears that had begun to fall. âYouâre not a burden, not in the slightest. Being with you, caring for you, loving youâitâs the greatest privilege of my life. I want to be there for you, Y/N, in every way I can. Because thatâs what love is. Itâs about being there for each other, lifting each other up, and making sure we both feel safe and cherished.â
Y/N sniffled, a small, tentative smile starting to form on her lips. âYou make me feel that way, Leah. You make me feel like Iâm⌠enough.â
âYou are more than enough,â Leah whispered, her voice thick with emotion. She leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss to Y/Nâs forehead, letting her lips linger there as she spoke. âYouâre everything to me. And Iâll spend every day reminding you of that, if thatâs what it takes.â
Y/N closed her eyes, letting the warmth of Leahâs words and touch envelop her. She felt the last of her doubts melting away, replaced by a deep sense of security and love. Leah had always been her rock, her safe place, and in moments like this, she knew there was nothing they couldnât face together.
âI love you so much,â Y/N whispered, her voice barely audible, but filled with all the emotion she felt in her heart.
Leah pulled back just enough to look into Y/Nâs eyes, her own gaze filled with tenderness. âAnd I love you, Y/N. More than youâll ever know.â
For a moment, they just stood there, wrapped up in each other, the world around them fading into the background. There was nothing but the sound of their breathing, the feel of their hands intertwined, and the steady, comforting beat of their hearts.
Eventually, Leah broke the silence, her voice soft but firm. âYou know what I think?â
Y/N tilted her head slightly, curiosity piqued. âWhat?â
Leah smiled, brushing a stray lock of hair behind Y/Nâs ear. âI think youâre one of the most extraordinary people Iâve ever met. And Iâm not just saying that because I love you. Iâm saying it because itâs true. You see the world in ways most people canât even begin to understand, and thatâs a gift. Donât ever let anyone make you feel like you need to dim that light.â
Y/Nâs heart swelled with emotion, her earlier doubts fading into the background as Leahâs words wrapped around her like a warm blanket. âThank you,â she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. âThank you for loving me like this.â
Leahâs smile widened, her eyes shining with affection. âIâm the one whoâs thankful, Y/N. Thankful that I get to love you, that I get to be the person by your side. Iâll always be here for you, no matter what.â
Y/N felt a deep sense of peace settle over her, the kind that came from knowing she was truly loved for who she was. With Leah by her side, she felt like she could face anything the world threw at her. Because Leah wasnât just her partnerâshe was her safe place, her anchor, and the person who made her feel like she was perfect just the way she was.

Hii! i love youâre fics and i was hoping i could request a story with leah or anyone really about getting caught on a kiss cam at a basketball game?
thank you have a great day :)
kiss cam - leah williamson
leah williamson x reader
description: in which you and your best friend get shown on the kiss cam at a basketball game - what does this mean for your friendship?
warnings: swearing, extremely long iâm sorry
a/n: thank you so much for the request, i had too much fun and got carried away lmao, hope you enjoy lovelies â¤ď¸ also thank you for the love!!!!
â â
â â
â â
â â
â
you and your best friend, leah were clearly in love with each other but absolute idiots about it. every single person on the planet thought it was obvious the two of you liked each other - to the surprise of many that the two of you werenât already dating.
âweâre best friendsâ both of you say at the same time, both of you not realising the mutual faces of hurt. it killed the both of you to respond to dating rumours, wanting nothing more than to be in a romantic relationship. because the both of you were friends for so long, you didnât want to risk losing each other, even if it meant to suffer in silence.
what made things worse for the both of you is that you were around each other, all day, everyday. you both play for england and arsenal, as well as having a shared apartment. the apartment is full of so much love, an accurate representation of you and leah.
you both balance each other out, leah was more outgoing while you were a little reserved at first until you got to know someone. though, you had gotten a lot better, due to leah always being there next to you, introducing you to people, whispering words of encouragement in your ear, holding your hand and kissing the side of your head. you swear it was strictly platonic, youâre very silly.
â
âlove come on! the bus is here, we need to get downstairs!â leah yells from the bed in the shared hotel room while you were in the bathroom.
âiâm coming, leah, my hair is just being a pain in the assâ you grumble, looking in the mirror and trying to get your hair done for national training. leah comes in the bathroom, standing behind you and wrapping her arms around your waist, resting her head on your shoulder and looking into your eyes through the mirror.
âyou look beautiful, babe, letâs go to the busâ she places a kiss on your cheek, you turn bright red, she moves her hands up and down your arms, giving your biceps a gentle squeeze. âiâll wait for you, hurry up please!â you giggle and nod at her smiling, she sends you a warm grin, light pink settling on the apples of her cheeks.
this was just one of the instances where both of you couldâve confessed your love for each other but the both of you are too clueless and oblivious to do so.
â
you and leah were both highly influential in the football industry, being advocates for numerous charities and organisations. you end up accompanying leah on her new york visit, both of you were invited to speak at the UN.
it wasnât a secret that you were afraid of heights, leah knew this and promised that she would take care of you. you sat next to each other on the plane, leah distracting you as much as possible. holding your hand and rubbing her thumb over yours, forcing you to watch a movie with her on her laptop, sharing wired headphones with one another. when you land, you give leah a kiss of appreciation on her cheek, thanking her profusely,
âiâd do anything for you, love, you know that right?â
âyeah, i would do the same, leeâ both of you thought about the interaction throughout the whole night, maybe - thereâs a chance that you liked each other (duh)
both of you explored new york, sharing laughs, taking pictures of each other, going shopping, loving each others company. as the days progressed, both of you got more touchy, clingy - separation wasnât an option anymore.
leah got invited to the ny liberty game, dragging you along with her with the promise of her buying whatever you wanted - you only joked about this, this girl could ask you to do anything and you would without any hesitation, something she knew all too well.
you were both sat court side with one another, chatting and sipping drinks and eating lollies, genuinely having so much fun. leah sat with her arm around your chair, constantly checking up on you.
âyou alright?â she moves down to say in your ear, her lips lightly grazing the shell of your ear, your cheeks lightly flushed. you nod up at her, âare you?â she smiles at you, ânever betterâ
the game was on, leah was focused on the game and you, arm now completely on your shoulder, thumb mindlessly grazing your exposed shoulder, you move closer into her, resting your body back into hers, she couldnât wipe the smile of her face.
honestly, watching leah watch the game was more entertaining for you, you loved to see the furrow between her brows, her smile and nod when something goes well, always squeezing your shoulder to indicate that you should be doing the same thing as her as you were confused with what was going on, as you were only focusing on the girl beside you.
there was a break until the next half, you and leah going back to chatting, her arm not moving position, keeping you close to her body and not wanting you to go anywhere.
âyou look so beautiful, loveâ she smiles at you again,
âlook at you, lee, you look gorgeousâ you move your hand to rest on her exposed knee, she shivers at the contact - you slightly perk up, you were stating your intentions and she understood them finally. she places her other hand over your own, looking into your eyes, both of you had wide pupils and cheesy grins plastered all over your faces. looking like lovesick puppies.
leah kept moving her head down to your mouth every time you spoke to her, as well as only speaking directly into your ear, loving the way you reacted each time she did it. she knew now that you felt the same, both of you increasingly becoming more flirty and touchy with one another, shamelessly showing both of your intentions, you werenât best friends anymore and it was finally clear to both of you.
you were both so engrossed with one another, focusing your attention solely on each other. leah could tell you were uncomfortable in the position you were sitting in, having to angle your body awkwardly just to look at her face. she moves her hand off yours and you look at her confused, she moves to grab both of your legs and placed them into her lap, comfortingly running her hand over your legs. you were so red that she laughed at you. she literally laughed at your face, smirking and moving to whisper in your ear again.
âwhatâs wrong, baby, are you hot?â you shake your head lightly, looking straight at the floor,
âwell you look hotâ she pauses âreally hotâ you lightly slap her chest and she laughs brightly at you, she was so obsessed with you, she wasnât gonna hide it anymore. you needed to give her a taste of her own medicine, it wasnât fair she had this advantage over you.
you grab her lightly by her necklace, bringing her ear to your mouth. âhypothetically, would you prefer if we made out or cuddled, or make out then cuddle?â, you graze your lips on her neck before you pull away. leahâs eyes widen and she squeezes the flesh of your thighs, you giggle at her bright red face as she moves away from you, clearing her throat and refusing to make eye contact.
âwhat? williamson, youâre just gonna leave me hanging?â she quickly glances over at you, making eye contact and flickering to your lips.
âyouâre a little shitâ before you could reply, you heard cheering, assuming the girls were coming out to play again, when you look up from leahâs eye contact, you noticed both you and leah were on the big screen, in a big, pink heart with âkiss camâ written on the bottom of the screen.
leah was still looking at you, you frantically tap the back of your hand on her chest, her eyes following where yours were. she grins brightly, and pulls you into a searing kiss, your lips moving together in harmony, she gripped your thigh harder, pulling you impossibly closer, the crowd erupted in cheers when you both finally put everyone out of their misery.
you both couldnât hear them, the camera showing other couples now. too focused on the kiss you were sharing. she prods her tongue on your bottom lip, you grant her access and both of you continue to share your emotions and love for one another through actions. after a little bit, you pull away and leah chases your lips to place a few more pecks on your lips, grabbing the base of your neck to keep you close.
once she finally pulls away, you both giggle - this was a long time coming and both of you were over the moon. she grabs your hands in hers and looks right into your eyes,
âif it wasnât obvious, i love you, a lot, i have foreverâ she rubs her thumbs over your knuckles, you smile at her so lovingly, she swears her heart was beating so fast out of her chest.
âiâve loved you forever, williamson, took you long enoughâ she scoffs at you,
âthen why didnât you say anything? why is this on me!â
âiâm shy!â
âuh, based on your little flirting in my ear, i think weâre way past shy, babyâ,
âoh fuck you, what about you touching me all night?, the leg thing? and letâs not ignore this little outfit youâve got on, this was your plan, huh? i bet you even organised the kiss camâ you say with fake annoyance, in reality you were so grateful for the kiss cam
she shakes her head at you, both of you pink in the cheeks, looking like you had gone outside without a jumper in the winter. âcome on, letâs go then, my girl, i believe you promised me a make out and a cuddleâ
âfirst of all, the game isnât over, secondly, you didnât respond iâm not sure if you deserve it-â
âi don't careâ
she pulls you up by the hand, smiling as you walk past people, gunning straight for the exit.
once you both get back to your hotel room, letâs just say you kept your promise.

stargazing
655 words, no warnings, @dorlenemicroficprompts
Marlene was looking at her. Dorcas was just lounging on the couch doing absolutely nothing, and Marlene was looking at her. She glanced up and met Marleneâs gaze.
âWhat are you doing?â Dorcas asked.
âChallenging you to a staring contest,â Marlene glared without fuel, her voice amused and her lips curving into a smirk. Without pausing for breath, she whisper-yelled, âThree two one go!â
Processing the words, Dorcas perched up on her elbow and stared Marlene down. She realised that Marleneâs narrowed eyes on her had been quite challenging, and honestly, she shouldâve gotten the message sooner.
- - -
In order to shamelessly stare at Dorcas, Marlene had an arsenal of excuses. She figured that sheâd probably used the âstaring contestâ excuse to its limit, so it was time to bring out another.
She and Dorcas were leaning against two trees near the edge of the park, autumn leaves littering the grass they sat on. While Dorcas hummed under her breath, raking her fingers through the leaves and smiling involuntarily at the dry crunch, the swirling embers of orange, red and gold rolling over each other, Marlene looked at her.
Marlene could look at her forever. Engrave Dorcas to her vision, until she could picture every one of Dorcasâs expressions with her eyes closed.
Soon the question came. âWhat are you doing?â Dorcas asked, her head tilted to the side in curiosity. Marlene saved the image to her brain.
Then her excuse, as she smiled and nodded past Dorcasâs shoulder: âLooking at the view behind you. Over there! Cute squirrel on that tree!â
Dorcas turned around, and Marlene sighed, âAw, you missed it.â
The excuse was an easy one. For example, if someone were to wave in your direction, you may not be sure if they were waving at you or someone behind you. You would turn around to check, and sure enough, someone behind you would be waving back. Just because it looked like Marlene was staring at Dorcas, it didnât mean she was.Â
(But just because it didnât mean she was, didnât mean she wasnât.)
- - -
Marlene let her gaze go hazy as she stared at Dorcas, as if she were in a dream and Dorcas was a vision constructed by angels. But Dorcas couldnât be constructed by anything, which was why Marlene had to stare, had to see the real thing, had to try her best to remember it all, because no one could make this ever again. Every one of Dorcasâs expressions was new, another representation of who Dorcas was, another picture for Marlene to grasp with her eyes and hold onto for life.
Dorcas broke her thoughts, âWhat are you doing?â
Marlene shook her head, feigning confusion, âSorry, did you ask me something? I wasnât focusing, you know that blurry state when youâre looking in the direction of something but not actually looking?â
Dorcas nodded in understanding, but Marlene, who stared at Dorcas for a living and therefore noticed everything about her, saw the corners of her mouth tilt downwards, as if theyâd lost a bit of hope.
Oh. Dorcas wanted Marlene to be staring at her. Marlene bit back a grin.
- - -
âWhat are you doing?â
Marlene smiled softly, âJust something on your face. Iâll remove it for you.â
Reaching forward, Marlene purposefully brushed her thumb against Dorcasâs cheek, where in reality, there was nothing except skin and Dorcasâs warm flush. Marlene felt the heat emanate from Dorcasâs pores into the air, and staring Dorcas right in the eyes, she pulled back slowly.
âGone,â she whispered. Dorcas nodded mutely.
- - -
Dorcas looked frustrated. âWhat are you doing?â
Marlene grinned. âStargazing.â
âWhat?â Dorcas repeated agitatedly. She sucked in a breath, debating something, and when she exhaled, it was with the words, âYou were looking at me.â Quiet, but sure.
Marlene shrugged, grin still in place. âYeah. Stargazing. Youâre a star and Iâm gazing at you. And Iâve been doing that for ages, by the way.â

Fighting for good, one widow bite at the time: Black Widow's cultural impact
Critics scoff when I call the Black Widow movie a favorite, but hear me out. It deserved a better release window, maybe at an earlier time, when things would've been viewed differently. Sure, it doesn't rise up what it could've been, leaving so much lingering dreams in the hearts of us, fans. So much potential remains untapped, so many questions unanswered... but Natasha Romanoff? She rises above it all. If you doubt her power, think again, and as I said, hear me out.
Black Widow, the assasin with steely eyes that hide and protect a heart of gold, has transcended the screen to become a cultural icon. From her first appereance in the MCU in Iron Man 2 (2010) to Black Widow (2021), she truly went through a lot, took us with her, and thaught everyone some lessons on the way.
Shattering the mold of the damsel in distress: She's no sidekick, she's a strategist and a fierce fighter. She is a vital member of the Avengers, that's a fact we saw in the 2012 movie. After all, how many characters can you name that tricked the God of Mischief? Nat didn't only do it exceptionally, she is the first we saw doing this on screen.
Reclaiming Narrative: Unlike many superheroes defined by singular origins, Black Widow carried the trauma of a dark past, manipulated by the Red Room, a notorious spy program. Her movie explored this narrative, acknowledging the exploitation and abuse she endured. This resonated with survivors of violence and abuse, offering validation and representation. Her journey of breaking free from her past resonated on a broader level, highlighting themes of resilience, empowerment, and overcoming hardship. Furthermore, she hasn't always been a hero, an avenger. "Regimes fall everyday. I tend not to weep over that, I'm russian" and "I've got red in my ledger. I'd like to wipe it out" show how she's not just using the power she already has, but has the power to change as well. This isn't about brute force, it's about internal struggle and choosing to become a better version of herself despite her history.
Sisterhood and Solidarity: Black Widow's story wasn't solely focused on herself. In "Black Widow," she teams up with other women who share similar experience, even if at first this doesn't seem to work, indoctrinated as they are in the Red Room programme. This depiction of female solidarity resonated with audiences, particularly feminist movements advocating for women's support networks and collective action.
Representation Matters: Black Widow's portrayal as a skilled leader and strategist challenged existing portrayals of Russian characters in Hollywood. They are often depicted as villains or stereotypes, but her complex identity sparked conversations about diversity and representation within the superhero genre.
Defying stereotypes: As the sole original female Avenger, Black Widow carried a unique weight. She didn't need superpowers or a revealing suit â her determination and arsenal spoke for themselves. That's true power. I mean, in some situations she only had two cool firearms, but did better than Captain America with a vibranium shield! I also love how her costume evolved over time, prioritizing functionality over sexualization. Ditching the impractical neckline in her solo movie? A much-needed win! It shows that Black Widow commands respect through her actions, not her body.
Her impact and importance punches like her combat skills, if you ask me.
So, the next time you see the Black Widow, remember, she's more than just a character. She's a symbol of strength, resilience, and the unwavering human spirit. Thanks for being a constant source of inspiration, Nat âŁď¸

Ink And Venom: A Writerâs Guide To Poisonous Prose
Within the realm of storytelling, poison holds a certain allureâa dark, mysterious substance that can both captivate and terrify readers. In this guide, I will delve into the world of writing with poison, exploring its various facets, techniques, and implications. Whether you seek to add a touch of danger, heighten suspense, or create memorable villains, this guide will equip you with the knowledge you need to master the art of poisonous prose.
When to Use Poison in Your Story
When should you use poison in your story? Poison can be a powerful tool for creating suspense and intrigue. By introducing poison into your narrative, you can build tension and keep readers on the edge of their seats. Consider incorporating poison in the following situations:
A Murder Mystery: Poison adds an element of mystery, as the true cause of death may not be immediately apparent. It allows you to create a web of suspects, each with their own motives and opportunities.
Political Intrigue: Poison has a rich history in political assassinations and power struggles. It can heighten the stakes and create an atmosphere of paranoia and treachery.
Betrayal and Revenge: Poison can be a weapon of choice for characters seeking revenge or harboring deep-seated grudges. It symbolizes a hidden threat, striking when least expected.
Psychological Thrillers: Poison can serve as a metaphorical representation of internal conflicts or toxic relationships, adding psychological depth to your characters and their journeys.
By strategically incorporating poison into your story, you can create unforgettable moments that will keep your readers engaged and guessing.
Types of Poisons for Writers to Consider
As a writer, it's important to familiarize yourself with the various types of poisons available to your storytelling arsenal. Here are some common types of poisons to consider when crafting your narrative:
Plant-Based Poisons: Derived from various plants, these poisons can range from deadly nightshade (belladonna) to oleander. Research the properties and effects of different botanical poisons to create realistic and intriguing scenarios. In Agatha Christie's "Five Little Pigs," the deadly poison coniine from hemlock plays a crucial role in the murder mystery.
Toxic Metals: Poisons such as arsenic, mercury, and lead fall under this category. Their presence in the story can be subtle or overt, depending on the desired effect. These poisons often have accumulative effects, making them useful for long-term poisoning plots. In Alexandre Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo," the antagonist, Fernand Mondego, uses a slow-acting poison containing arsenic to bring about the demise of his enemies.
Chemical Compounds: This broad category encompasses a wide range of synthetic poisons, including cyanide, ricin, and strychnine. These substances can be potent, swift-acting, and offer opportunities for creative storytelling twists. In Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot," a poisoned powder containing the deadly plant toxin ricin plays a central role in Sherlock Holmes' investigation.
Venomous Creatures: Poisons derived from venomous creatures such as snakes, spiders, or exotic marine life introduce an element of danger and natural lethality into your narrative. Understanding the effects and characteristics of different venoms adds authenticity to your writing. In J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the venom of a basilisk becomes a crucial ingredient in creating antidotes and battling the Dark Arts.
Remember to research each poison thoroughly, ensuring accuracy in both their effects and potential antidotes, as this will lend credibility to your storytelling.
Common Side Effects and Symptoms of Poison
When writing about poison, it's important to understand the common side effects and symptoms associated with different toxins. This knowledge will help you craft realistic and believable scenarios. Here are some common side effects and symptoms of poisoning to consider:
Gastrointestinal Distress: Many poisons, especially those ingested orally, initially affect the digestive system. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and cramping.
Neurological Effects: Certain poisons can target the central nervous system, leading to a range of neurological symptoms. These may include dizziness, confusion, seizures, tremors, paralysis, or even loss of consciousness.
Cardiovascular Effects: Some poisons interfere with the heart and circulatory system, causing abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias), increased or decreased heart rate, high blood pressure, or a sudden drop in blood pressure.
Respiratory Distress: Certain poisons can affect breathing and lung function. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, coughing, or wheezing.
Organ Damage: Prolonged exposure to certain toxins can cause damage to specific organs such as the liver, kidneys, or lungs. This damage may manifest as organ failure, jaundice, or difficulty with normal bodily functions.
Skin and Eye Effects: Some poisons can have immediate effects on the skin or eyes upon contact. This may include irritation, redness, blistering, or even vision impairment.
Remember that the severity and timeline of symptoms can vary depending on the poison, dose, and individual characteristics. Conduct thorough research to ensure accuracy and realism in portraying the effects of poisoning in your writing.
Famous Poisons Through the Ages and How They Work
Throughout history, numerous poisons have gained infamy for their use in real-life incidents and their portrayal in literature. Understanding the famous poisons of the past can provide inspiration and context for your writing. Here are some notable examples:
Socrates' Hemlock: Hemlock, derived from the plant Conium maculatum, was famously used to execute the Greek philosopher Socrates. It acts as a neurotoxin, paralyzing the central nervous system and causing respiratory failure.
Arsenic: Arsenic, a toxic metalloid, has a dark history and was commonly used in poisoning cases. It was virtually tasteless and odourless, making it a popular choice for covert murders. Arsenic interferes with cellular respiration, leading to organ failure.
Curare: Curare is a plant-based poison used by indigenous peoples of South America for hunting. It works by blocking neuromuscular transmission, leading to muscle paralysis and respiratory arrest.
Cyanide: Cyanide compounds, such as potassium cyanide, are highly lethal and act rapidly. They disrupt cellular respiration by binding to enzymes crucial for energy production, causing cells to suffocate.
Ricin: Ricin is a potent toxin derived from castor beans. It inhibits protein synthesis within cells, leading to organ failure. It gained notoriety due to its use in real-life assassination attempts and its portrayal in literature.
Tetrodotoxin: Tetrodotoxin is a deadly poison found in certain marine creatures, such as pufferfish. It blocks sodium channels in nerve cells, leading to paralysis, respiratory failure, and potentially death.
By researching and understanding the mechanisms of these famous poisons, you can add authenticity and depth to your storytelling. Remember to weave their effects and characteristics into your narrative in a plausible and engaging manner.
How to Kill a Character with Poison
When it comes to killing a character with poison, careful planning and attention to detail are crucial. Here are some key considerations for crafting the perfect crime:
Motivation and Intent: Establish a compelling motive for the character administering the poison. This could be driven by revenge, jealousy, power, or other deep-seated emotions. The intent behind the act will shape the overall narrative and character development.
Research and Accuracy: Thoroughly research the chosen poison to understand its properties, effects, and dosages. Accuracy is essential for maintaining reader engagement and suspension of disbelief. Ensure that the chosen poison aligns with the character's access and knowledge.
Method of Administration: Determine how the poison will be administered. Common methods include lacing food or drink, injecting a solution, applying a poisonous substance to an object, or even using a poisoned weapon. Consider the character's opportunities, resources, and the desired level of subtlety or overt confrontation.
Timing and Dose: Consider the timing and dose of the poison. A well-timed dose can create suspense and unexpected twists. The dose should be lethal but plausible, taking into account factors such as body weight, individual tolerance, and potential mitigating factors (e.g., antidotes).
Covering Tracks: Craft a plan to cover the tracks of the poisoner. This may involve creating alibis, tampering with evidence, or diverting suspicion toward other characters. A well-executed cover-up adds layers of complexity and intrigue to the narrative.
Consequences and Repercussions: Explore the aftermath of the poisoning. How does the death impact other characters and the overall plot? Consider the emotional and psychological toll on those involved, as well as potential investigations or consequences faced by the poisoner.
Remember that portraying a realistic poisoning scenario requires a delicate balance between creativity and accuracy. Strive to captivate readers while maintaining plausibility within the world you have crafted.
Considering the Implications of Writing with Poison
While writing with poison can add intrigue and suspense to your story, it's essential to consider the ethical implications involved. Here are some key points to ponder:
Responsible Storytelling: As a writer, you have a responsibility to handle sensitive topics with care. Poisoning, especially when depicted in a realistic and detailed manner, can be distressing for some readers. Consider the potential impact on your audience and approach the subject matter responsibly.
Glorification vs. Realism: Strike a balance between creating an engaging narrative and avoiding the glorification of harmful acts. Portray the consequences and repercussions of poisonings to illustrate the gravity of such actions. Show the emotional toll on characters and explore the moral dilemmas they face.
Reader Sensibilities: Readers have varying thresholds for violence, graphic content, and triggering material. Be mindful of potential triggers related to poisoning, such as discussions of self-harm, suicide, or traumatic experiences. Offer appropriate content warnings or handle such themes with sensitivity.
Research and Accuracy: Thorough research is essential for accurate portrayal. Misinformation or sensationalized descriptions can perpetuate myths or misconceptions about poisons. Ensure that your writing is grounded in scientific understanding and consult reputable sources.
Character Empathy: Develop well-rounded characters with motivations that extend beyond their use of poison. By humanizing them and exploring their complexities, readers can empathize with their struggles, even if they engage in morally objectionable acts.
Raising Awareness and Education: Take the opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of real-life poisonings. Provide information on prevention, identification, and response to actual poisoning incidents. Offer resources or references for readers seeking more information.
By navigating the ethical dimensions of writing with poison, you can create a compelling narrative while remaining sensitive to your readership and the broader impact of your work.

your art is the most realistic art i have seen this fandom spit out i really wish you would make remus shorter and stop making ocâs
This is why I lose enthusiasm for you cunts.
Sick of defending a fucking drawing, a fictional character. Sick of the same agendas in this online world where Remus has to be this fucking wet mop of a man who has one singular personality trope of being obsessed with Sirius Black and wouldnât say boo to a goose. Have you met real men? You ever interacted with your average Joe, who is a bit shy, bit awkward, bit of a weirdo but he doesnât have to come with a pre installed stutter and helpless heart eyes and no other arsenal but a goo goo gaga state of mind for his love interest. You lot are unhealthily obsessed. Daily, fucking, bullshit, daily headcanons, daily this, daily that.
My Remus and Sirius are never going to change. Whatâs insane is the amount of âheteronormativeâ claims I see attached to this debacle of height and size. I know a man, who is exceptionally tall, built, has had a boyfriend, and topped him the entire way through the relationship. He did not enjoy bottoming, and yet is a bisexual individual, nothing âstereotypicalâ homosexual about him or his appearance whatsoever. In fact, heâs very much a Remus variant in my eyes; he is softly natured, introverted, and selective socially and STILL A STONY TOP. Real life, real person, not curated from a thread you found on Twitter and have swallowed up whole.
What happened to coming into a fandom space, making something and going, âthatâs hotâ. When did it become a space to make sure every representation was ticked, to make sure one character isnât too this or too that. Iâm not here to read the same stories or see the same art 100 times over. I fell in love with these two men and have since had a very solid image of them in my head and create art based off of those ideas. I donât feel pressured to make sure I give my Remus certain soft traits to justify making him look the way I do. I donât feel the need to advertise Sirius being this massively charismatic guy just to give him a personality because otherwise you might think he doesnât have one, because of the slightly more feminine light I draw him in (which is misogynistic you dumb fucks). Just because, I draw my Remus tall and a buffed out lank, does not make him an ultra turbo Alpha. Just because I draw my Sirius smaller, does not mean he is a helpless twink. But hereâs the secret nobodyâs telling youâ even if I did draw them like that, even if those were my holy canons and preferences for these boys, thatâs okay. Iâm here to create things that make me go, âfuck yeah thatâs hotâ, âhell yeah I want to see Sirius get pulverised by Remus and no I donât want to see Remus get pulverised by Sirius and no I donât feel the need to defend thatâ, âyeah I prefer tough love over easy loveâ, âabsolutely love it when one of them is a dick to the other and thereâs heaps of toxic tension, or maybe theyâre both like that and theyâre both sarcastic pricks that have to work it outâ. Iâm never going to adhere to the obsession of character moulds you lot have created.
Sick of this space being turned into a political pansy parade. Itâs alright if you want to draw this gay couple with any features you want, hyper masculine, hyper feminine, somewhere in the middle, trans, prefer one of them topping, prefer them to be asexual, prefer them to be toxic and have grit (thatâs my trope), or just want easy fluff. And itâs also alright if youâre just in fandom because youâre a bit perverted (like me) and wanted to explore that in a couple you found super fucking hot. Donât let people use the word fetishise, donât let people use the word heteronormative, donât let people bamboozle you with big words and reams of bullet points to incite shame, donât let people box you in, just keep watching the porn, keep consuming the porn, keep avoiding the shit you want to avoid, and enjoy what you want without shame.

Sorry if this is unwanted but if I could recommend one comic to read for Roy Harper I'd say the Arsenal (1998) mini. It's only 4 issues long so it's quick to read, and he's a really interesting character and I love him a lot :)
I just finished reading it! That was fun! I can already tell from it why people love Roy so much. I'm not usually a fan of this art style, but it grew on me! This is my fav panel:
I can't speak for how good the Navajo representation is (and I think it's fair to be cautious with anything Devin Grayson writes, lol) but I do enjoy that it's explored so thoroughly since I hadn't a clue Roy had that heritage before. Arguably it did feel excessive at times though.
Thank you for the rec!
#askjesncin#âwhen an Indigenous person does not make something- you'll know because there's an excess of Indigenous signifiersâ#that quote is from the devs of Achimostawinan Games. And it's so spot on about how outsiders feel the need to overcompensate#cultural representation by constantly flexing signifiers. whereas people of that heritage don't need to perform that part of themselves.

Itâs honestly kind of impressive how awful Hemlock is. Heâs not like Nolan, who was awful, too, but Nolan was more representational of the idea of your typical asshat imperial than he was a person. Hemlock, though, is weirdly three-dimensional. Heâs arch-evil, but he doesnât ever feel like a cipher. Heâs human, even with his limited screentimeâand yet, heâs not humanized in your typical way.
Typically when someone wants to humanize a villain like that theyâll give them some kind of positive quality, or some kind of tragic backstory, or something. Make him charming. The closest we get with Hemlock is that heâs soft-spoken and polite, but itâs the politeness of a cup of tea thatâs laced with arsenic. Heâs intelligent and goal-oriented, but what he does with that is disgusting. Heâs the only imperial character we meet who sees the clones as human enough to call them by their namesâto prefer it, as far as I can tellâand every time he does I want to punch him in the face.
Heâs not a cackling space wizard. Cackling space wizards are fun sometimes, at least. Heâs not the walking melodrama that was Maul either (though thatâs something I adore about Maul). Hemlockâs justâŚa guy. A horrible guy. Heâs so evil in such a human way that heâs repulsive.
#the bad batch#great character ABSOLUTELY AWFUL PERSON#his name: Royce#his vibes: rancid#Iâll also admit that Iâm intrigued by the decision to not give him a core-world accent
